La Rochelle

Worth a day’s visit in itself, La Rochelle features the old fortified port as well as the Old Town which houses the lively shopping centre around the town hall.

No wonder La Rochelle is a favourite haunt of painters: As well as the seascapes, the old town has narrow streets with secret passages, ancient wooden houses and stately mansions – not to mention an abundance of seafood restaurants.

Make sure that you visit the Tour St Nicholas, La Tour de la Lanterne and the Musée du Histoire Naturelle. The aquarium and the Musée des Modèles Reduits are great for children.

Then, right on the doorstep, there is mile after mile of unspoilt sandy beaches.
